problem with neighbour discovery

Hello, I have a problem with ipv6 connection over usb between a linux (RH9) and an iPAQ running familar. It used to work by the way.. RH9 has 2001:838:392:1::1/64 IPAQ has 2001:838:392:1::2/64 tcpdump from a ping6 from IPAQ to RH9 gives ongoing: 18:33:44.660442 2001:838:392:1::2 > ff02::1:ff00:1: icmp6: neighbor sol: who has 2001:838:392:1::1(src lladdr: 0a:fc:e3:fb:f2:77) (len 32, hlim 255) 18:33:44.660542 2001:838:392:1::1 > 2001:838:392:1::2: icmp6: neighbor adv: tgt is 2001:838:392:1::1(SO)(tgt lladdr: 5a:14:c9:63:8f:52) (len 32, hlim 255) and no ping6 replies eitherway. Via ethernet the RH9 is connected to another RH machine and this pings ok. It seems the neighbor advertisement from the RH is not accepted by the IPAQ? Does anyone has a suggestion? Bas

I wonder about a couple of things here: IPv6 over USB? Is that pseudo ethernettype or something? I have never seen it. What OS is there running on your IPAQ that it supports IPv6? Or did you stick a Linux on it?

Yes, native ipv6 over usb. And indeed, I installed debian linux on the thing(familiar.handhelds.org). I solved the problem by the way, it appeares I have to do things in a certain order. First plug in the usb-cable, so that on either side usb and usb-net is hotplugged, and than assign a link local (and global) ipv6 address to the ipaq usbf interface. This is not (properly) done automagically, or it is my lack of experience with ipv6 (most probably). Now it works. But when I keep the ipaq on, after some time the link is lost and I have to do the ritual all over again.

Linklocal's should be done automagically by the driver of the interface, in this case thus the usb-net driver. When that works an RA should be sufficient to get global addreses. If it doesn't work it most probably is a case of non-working multicast. Tcpdump and find out.
