Debian: 'ifdown sixxs' hanging up at 99.9% cpu
[de] Shadow Hawkins on Friday, 09 January 2004 23:50:22
Hi, since I've set up my tunnel manually for the first few days I now tried to get it work automatically after reboot. First copied the config from the FAQ to /etc/network/interfaces. First persistent problem is I have to add "metric 128" to the route add default line because the default seems to be 1024. Although after the clean reboot this route is the only "default route" for ::/0 (there are local routes for fe80::/64, ff0::/8 etc), it won't work with metric 1024. No ping, nothing until I change the metric to something less than 256 which is the metric for all local routes. Doesn't make sense to me??? My second problem now is that "ifdown" doesn't work for the tunnel device. 'ifdown sixxs' calls 'ip tunnel del dev sixxs' and this ip-command hangs up using 99.9% cpu. The process even cannot be killed with SIGKILL:-/ On the syslog console the following line shows up: kernel: unregister_netdevice: waiting for sixxs to become free. usage count =1 This message repeats after some time again and again. When trying to reboot (without calling ifdown manually) the shutdown hangs at "Deconfiguring network interfaces..." I didn't wait longer than some minutes and then just hit the reset button. I also tried a "pre-down ip route del..." line in /etc/network/interfaces which didn't help. Any ideas? Regards, Wolfgang

An old message, but i had a similar problem since recent 2.6.9 linux kernel releases... I solved enabling AICCU automatic configuration and deleting the auto sixxs line from /etc/network/interfaces Hope to be of some help, Antonio.

Try ifconfig sixxs down

You might want to tell us which kernel you are using, I guess it is Linux, but which version?

Hi, System: Debian Woody 3.0r2 Kernel: 2.6.1 compiled today with all necessary options enabled I didn't have any problems with 2.6.0 till I switched to 2.6.1 today, but with 2.6.0 I didn't try the ifup/ifdown things. I changed this after upgrading to 2.6.1. Regards, Wolfgang

2.6.low is very beta, I suggest upgrading your kernel to 2.4.24 if you want a stable kernel. If you want to develop.... contact the kernel mailinglist and complain by explaining your problem. It could quite well be some userland change btw.

I wouldn't call it `very beta'. It hasn't that many problems anymore (at least when compiled by yourself). Even the kernel archives do list 2.6.4 as `latest stable'. In fact IPv6 was plug'n'play under Linux 2.6 with Gentoo. As easy as on 2.4.x, just three ifconfig and one route command and the tunnel is up and running.

Almost 4 months later that is indeed the case, 2.6.4 is even more stable than any current 2.4.x especially the newer ones

Does an `ifconfig sixxs down' work for you?
