Vista and IPv6 huge problems
[nl] Shadow Hawkins on Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:49:17
Hi All, I'm a bit of a computer noob so i hope you guys could easily guide me through this complex world. I have Vista, every update installed. I requested sixxs.net and a tunnel: Tunnel Id : T19137 PoP Name : nlhaa01 (nl.leaseweb [AS16265]) Your Location : xxxx, nl SixXS IPv6 : 2001:1af8:fe00:2e::1/64 Your IPv6 : 2001:1af8:fe00:2e::2/64 SixXS IPv4 : 94.75.219.73 Tunnel Type : Dynamic (ayiya) Now, i downloaded the console version of Aiccu. I went trough the steps on: https://www.sixxs.net/wiki/Configuring_Windows_Vista#.281.29__Verify_that_Windows_Vista_has_all_updates_installed My conf file looks like this: username RXXX-SIXXS password XXXXX tunnel_id T19137 verbose true automatic true Then i installed the tap drivers, and did the netsh commands... Now Step 9: (9) Test your upstream DNS Server for IPv6 "AAAA" lookups C:\Users\xxxx\Desktop> nslookup -type=AAAA www.ipv6.sixxs.net DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.1.1 Niet-bindend antwoord: Naam: www.ipv6.m.sixxs.net Address: 2001:838:1:1:210:dcff:fe20:7c7c Aliases: www.ipv6.sixxs.net I am not sure if this responds is correct, because it times out? My firewall is disabled. Then, when i use this command: aiccu-2008-03-15-windows-console.exe start It states the following: C:\Users\xxx\Desktop>aiccu-2008-03-15-windows-console.exe start [error] Couldn't retrieve first tunnel for the above reason, aborting So i can't start my tunnel, can't do anything now. Can you guys help me? (9) Test your upstream DNS Server for IPv6 "AAAA" lookups
C:\Users\xxxx\Desktop> nslookup -type=AAAA www.ipv6.sixxs.net
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.1
Which NAT box (or what some people call a 'router', the thing at 192.168.1.1) do you have? The problem most likely is that your NAT box's DNS caching recursor function is broken. It most likely drops queries with AAAA records in them. Possible Solution around this (assuming this is the problem): a) update your NAT box's software (maybe they fixed it). b) configure a different DNS server on your hosts. Your ISP resolvers or something like OpenDNS

Hi, sorry for the late reply, but I was on holiday. I would really love to get this to work. My router is this: A+G Broadband Router LINKSYS Are you sure this is the problem? Can you think of something else? I don't know what to do, could you provide some step by step solution? Thank you!

Is the Vista box the DMZ for the router? The router needs to pass it the tunnel protocol. I have two vista systems running aiccu, both work with ipv6 as long as one is DMZ. You can then send specific ports (web server, mail) to other boxes.

I had the same problem with my linksys box. I changed the DNS server of my ipv4 settings to, for example, 194.7.1.4 and ping -6 works immediatly. Did you already try that? cheers, Maarten.

Hi there. The issue is link-local IPv6 autoconfiguration address for your physical ethernet adapter, which can be resolved by configuring your IPv6 address to a static unused IP such as 2002:81a8:102:: with a prefix of 48 with router and dns fields blank. I was also able to get the service to work, but the bit about interact with desktop on the service is useless on Vista, and I actually use the same .bat file which I made a lnk for to actually trigger the aiccu daemon... mainly because I had a bad experience trying to directly fill in the Application string as the full command-line. http://yorickdowne.wordpress.com/tag/ayiya/ - first blog post i found with more detail than the SixXS wiki http://yorickdowne.wordpress.com/2008/01/26/ipv6-at-home-part-1-overview-teredo/ - actual info about routing/dns issues
