Squid and IPv6-Support

If you want to use squid and it should support IPv6, here are some informations:
I use the squid-proxy under debian. The problem was, there are binary packages under http://init.ca/debian/squid-IPv6/ available, but under woody you need libc6 and glibc from testing. After that you could install it and after that you have to reconfig the squid.conf, because there has has been changed some things. (Informations for using packages from testing/unstable under woody are available under http://jaqque.sbih.org/kplug/apt-pinning.html)
The proxy now is running very good, but without snmp-support, have to look for it. It seems, that i have to recompile the hole package. :X
If you don't use Debian or you want to compile it by yourself, you will find the infos here: http://www.squid-cache.org/mail-archive/squid-dev/200110/0267.html#start
Hope this thread will help you a bit for a better using of ipv6. >:)

Thomas

I don't see the use of Proxies anymore nowadays for the following reasons:
- most content that gets served is dynamic (thus can't be cached)
- access lines have become faster thus a proxy is of little use.
Thus the only reason why one would like to use a proxy might be for converting between IPv4 and IPv6 etc. but for the rest, I really can't see why one wants to take the problem of configuring one. It uses more resources and time than what you get in return.

It would be usefull for clients behind a router without NAT-permission or content-filtering for example. :9-

speaking of content filtering i would like to filter the http requests going through my ipv6 gateway (rather than use a proxy) anybody got any sudgestions about how to do this?

You could do it with the snmp module of squid and MRTG. But when you want to use the .deb i meant, you have to compile it by yourself, because in the precompiled package is no snmp-support in squid.
You could find an example under: http://fek.dyndns.org/mrtg/proxy-hit.html

One reason for a proxy is to use it as a IPv4<->IPv6 gateway. I do not think Squid will work with IPv6 for quite some time, so I switched to Polipo.
